Bulletin 273 – People’s Committee in Defense of Lula and Democracy

1. Constitutional law professor Lenio Streck denounced judge Sergio Moro for trying to break the law in order to bar an investigation by the National Justice Council (CNJ) into partisan political actions during his vacation, after accepting an invitation to be Justice Minister in the new right wing extremist government of Jair Bolsonaro (PSL). The CNJ investigation was opened on November 9th, at the request of the Brazilian Association of Jurists for Democracy, the PT party and a citizen. On November 15th, Moro decided to trade his vacation for a request for exoneration, but Streck said that a member of the judiciary or the public prosecutors office, even while on vacation, cannot participate in political negotiations, as Moro did. “Not during an electoral period or ever. 2. Luane Oliveira, an activist from the Landless Workers Movement (MST) led the good afternoon shout to former president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva today, on the 227th day of democratic resistance in Curitiba. She recited a poem called “It’s time to love” from the book Versando a Rebeldia. “It is always time to love/even with all the inflamed hatred/Even as they clamor for blood/ and violence is the word of order for some/it is always time to love,” says one verse of the poem.
3. After the good afternoon shout to the ex-president, there was a cultural activity in the Lula Livre Vigil coordinated by activists from the MST, with guitars, songs and political poetry praising freedom and justice.
4. The good night shout to ex-president Lula was lead by Lurdemille Maciel, from Mairi, Bahia. She came with her family to get to know Curitiba and approve of the opportunity to visit the Vigil. “I only saw smiles when I arrived here. I am anxious to see Lula freed and I hope this happens soon,” she said.
