- This Thursday, January 31, marked 300 days of political imprisonment for ex-President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who was condemned in a case which has already gone down in history for its lack of proof and obsessive persecution of Lula on the part of ex-judge Sergio Moro, who ended up becoming a cabinet minister in the right wing extremist government of Jair Bolsonaro. These 300 days were marked by the daily resistance of activists across Brazil and in the Lula Livre Vigil in Curitiba. - The good morning shout to President Lula on this Thursday, January 31, was reinforced by a bus caravan of public school teachers from the state school system in Greater Curitiba and more than 200 indigenous peoples from across the state of Paraná, who united for the National Day of Mobilization of Indigenous peoples for the immediate demarcation of their lands and for the struggle for freedom for the ex-President. Vice Chief Mario, from the Barão de Antonina Indigenous Reserve, spoke in the name of the indigenous peoples at the Vigil and told of the importance of demarcation of the lands of their ancestors, which are under threat now from the right wing Bolsonaro government.
- The good evening shout to Lula was led by the National Petroleum Workers Federation (FUP). FUP coordinator Zé Maria participated in a conversation circle in the Marielle Lives space on the strategic importance of petroleum from the pre-salt reserves and reiterated that Lula is, in fact, a political prisoner. “They are transforming the nation into a veritable sales counter, delivering our wealth and removing the rights that were won by the working class from the city and the countryside,” said the union leader.
- After visiting his brother Lula on this Thursday, January 31, Father Chico criticized the useless ruling of the Federal Supreme Court on Wednesday, January 30, which authorized Lula to attend his brother Vavá’s funeral after it had already ended. He also criticized the constant disrespect for the law in Lula’s treatment. He said that the laws are only obeyed “when they are afraid of people taking it to the streets,” protesting against the abuses of the judiciary and the dismantling of rights. - Ex-Minister Aloizio Mercadante and Congressman-elect Rui Falcão (PT- São Paulo) visited Lula today, on January 31. Despite the pain that he was submitted to by not being allowed to say goodbye to his brother Vavá, the ex-President made a point of thanking the support of everyone and asked that the name of his oldest brother be remembered as a symbol of struggle. “Vavá was there in all of our struggles and suffered a lot in recent years. Even so, he wanted to see Lula. It was one of his last requests,” said Mercadante. Read more here: http://www.pt.org.br/o-ultimo-desejo-do-vava-era-se-despedir-de-lula-revela-mercadante/
- Responsible for nominating Lula for the Nobel Peace Prize, the Argentinian activist Adolfo Pérez Esquivel gave in interview on this Thursday, January 31, to the French TV station RFI, and spoke of his fear for the life of the ex-President. “It is horrible that they did not let Lula go to the funeral of his oldest brother. It was an attack where there is already a lot of hate. I fear for Lula’s life, due to the situation he is in. There are reactionary sectors of society that have no limit to their cruelty,” said Esquivel. Read more here:
