Curitiba – 05/13/2018 – 9.15 PM
1. A group of militant mothers and defenders of democracy gave the “good morning” yell to former President Lula this Sunday (May 13). Even Mothers’ Day couldn’t keep them away from the Federal Police building.
2. The mothers went on to play the leading role in the #LulaLivre Vigil through the afternoon. Four of the defenders of Lula who are involved in the resistance in Curitiba appeared on the program “Democracia em Rede”, and made statements direct from the Casa da Democracia in which they explained why they had decided to leave their normal lives behind, take their children with them and get together to defend Lula.
3. At the end of the afternoon, before the “good night” yell to the former president, the solicitor Carol Proner conversed with the protesters. She explained how Lula’s political imprisonment is the outcome of a coup that began with Dilma Rousseff being impeached without having committed any crime. She also said that the authors of the coup had ignored the law and it can therefore only be reversed through popular pressure on the streets.
4. The documentary “The Process” by Brazilian director Maria Augusta Ramos, has won another international award. The prize was awarded by the jury of DocumentaMadrid, a film festival held in Madrid from May 3 to 13. The judges felt that the film, which portrays the backstage maneuvers in the lead-up to the 2016 parliamentary coup against President Dilma Rousseff, deserved to be awarded “for the energy and tension with which it reveals the web of interests underlying a situation with global repercussions.” The trailer was shown at the Film Festival for Democracy, which was held in Curitiba with some sessions at the #LulaLivre Vigil.
5. On Saturday (May 12), the pre-launch of the International Lula and Democracy Solidarity Committee in the United States took place in Washington. The event was supported by a number of US activists, trade unionists and civil society representatives. Also participating were Inês Magalhães, former Minister of Cities in the Rousseff government, trade unionist Stanley Gacek and lawyer João Lucas Coimbra.
