Bulletin 62 – People’s Committee for the Defense of Lula and Democracy

- The National President of PT, Senator Gleisi Hoffmann (Paraná), visited ex-President Lula today along with the ex-Governor of Bahia, Jaques Wagner. The meeting was possible thanks to a deal between Lula’s family, the defense lawyers and the Federal Police, authorized by Judge Carolina Lebbos, which sets aside the last hour of family visitation time on Thursdays for visits from friends who are authorized by the ex-President.
- Lula made a point of sending hugs to the #LulaLivre Vigil, reiterating that the union of the people in name of his freedom has given him a lot of strength. Jacques Wagner observed that a man with the sense of justice of Lula, who has carried it his entire life, could only be angry at the injustice of his condemnation without proof. “I’ve been friends with Lula for 40 years. I met him in 1978 in Bahia. I came to see him today and he consoled us, instead of the contrary. He likes us, he likes people and this is I will go with him until the end of the line,” he said.
- Lula has used his time to read a lot of books, articles and documents. Due to this, according to Gleisi, he is very worried with Brazil’s economic situation, the destruction of conquests and the return of Brazil to the UN’s World Hunger Map. The President showed solidarity for the people in the building that collapsed in São Paulo and advised for specialists in the area of architecture and housing connected to PT and the social movements to think about the issue of housing, based on successful experiences during the PT governments, according to Gleisi.
- During early evening the Senator met with Jefferson Lima de Menezes, who was hit by one of the bullets fired during the attack on the Marisa Leticia camp last Saturday. During the afternoon, Jefferson testified for over two hours at the police Homicide and People’s Protection Station (DHPP) in Curitiba. Afterward he went to the Medical Legal Institute (IML) to conduct and investigative examination. During the Gleisi and Wagner’s visit, Lula made a point about asking about the comrade and sent him an affectionate hug, recognizing his strength and saying that he hopes he continues in the fight along all of those who are resisting.
- Democracy is being built through practice on the Olga Benário corner. This afternoon, several people connected to PT and the social movements and other parties, like Renato Simões, Marcio Pochmann, Roberto Amaral, Ariovaldo Carvalho and Maria Lúcia da Silveira, participated in the first of five debates which aim to create a permanent channel of dialogue with the various popular fronts and left leaders about Lula’s plan for governance.
- Tonight, Congresswoman Ana Perugini (PT-São Paulo) ate dinner in one of the kitchens near the Vigil. The Congresswoman announced that she will sleep with the activists in the Maria Leticia camp and, in the morning, will participate in the walk to Olga Benário corner to yell good morning to the ex-President.
