Bulletin 606 – People’s Committee in Defense of Lula and Democracy

1. This Saturday (October 19), the 560th day of resistance, the Free Lula Vigil received visitors from the states of São Paulo, Santa Catarina, Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro and Rio Grande do Sul, in addition to the ever-present activists from Paraná. A group of tourists from the United States made their own contribution to the democratic struggle for the release of former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, a political prisoner since April 7, 2018. 2. The representatives from various Brazilian states and the American tourists were joined by representatives from progressive political parties as well as the active social movements that make the Free Lula Vigil in Curitiba the most legitimate democratic stretch of land in the country. Leaders of the Landless Rural Workers Movement (MST), the CUT Labor Union and the Communist Party of Brazil (PCdoB) were some of the guests who took part in the traditional greeting to the former president throughout the day.
3. During the afternoon, the Vigil hosted a conversation circle, mediated by workers from the national oil sector, with the purpose of presenting and debating mobilization proposals against the precarious rights of workers in the category and the dismantling of Petrobras, a strategic state-owned enterprise that is being sliced up and handed over to foreign groups by the far-right government of Jair Bolsonaro.
4. In a letter addressed to the State Congress of the Workers Party, former President Lula da Silva stressed the importance of the party in face of the historical moment that the country is going through, with the words “Brazil has never needed a strong and united PT to resist and advance together with the people as much as it does now.” The activists promptly answered the call of the PT’s greatest leader and throughout Saturday (October 19) began the renewal of the state directorates all over Brazil.
