  1. On Teachers Day in 2003, during the first year of his mandate, former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva made a commitment to Brazil’s teachers. “I want to finish my mandate and be able to travel around the country and, in every place I visit, I want to be able to look in the eyes of a teacher and say that I did my best to improve the education system in our country,” he said. In fact, many historic advances were made, but the current government is trying to destroy them. On this October 15th, Teachers Day, in a climate of so many attacks against public education, it is important to remember some of the advances that were made by the former President for the education system. A debate was held at the Lula Livre Vigil on this Tuesday, October 15th, in solidarity with the Ecuadoran people, in defense of sovereignty and against the authoritarian government of Lenin Moreno. The Ecuadoran president is in the center of a crisis which has brought thousands of people to the streets of Quito after he announced new measures to meet the needs of the IMF that would drastically reduce the population’s spending power. The debate was moderated by the Ecuadoran artist Javier Guerrero Meza.

In an interview with the Portuguese TV network RTP, which aired this Tuesday, October 15th, former President Lula said that right wing President Jair Bolsonaro is destroying democracy in Brazil and that he doesn’t care about it or the Brazilian people. “He doesn’t like freedom,” Lula said.   1. Federal Supreme Court Minister Gilmar Mendes said in an interview that Lula deserves a fair trial. During his participation on the TV show “Conversa com Bial”, on Monday night (October 14th), the Minister said that there were problems in the trials against the former President and, due to this, they need hold a retrial with an impartial judge. “My opinion is that, in the academic circles around the world, there is an impression that there are a lot of irregularities in the case against Lula, and, therefore, I say that Lula deserves a fair trial,” said Mendes.
