1- During a Democratic party presidential pre-candidacy event, Senator Bernie Sanders reaffirmed his commitment to democracy and human rights and spoke out in favor of freedom for former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, at present a political prisoner for over 500 days. In June, Sanders asked that Lula’s sentence be quashed on the basis, among others, of ‘Vaza Jato’ reports revealing a secret plot behind Operation Lava Jato. 2- The Free Lula Caravan and Fernando Haddad arrived in Recife this Saturday (August 31). Welcomed enthusiastically by local residents, Haddad, who was Education Minister in the Lula and Dilma governments, called for Northeasterners to continue fighting for the release of former president Lula. “We won’t leave the streets until Lula is here with us,” said Haddad. 3- The governments of former President Lula remain the most approved of by the Brazilian people, as shown by a Vox Populi poll released on Friday (August 30). 4- Free Lula working bees always take place during the last weekend of each month and aim to inform the Brazilian people about the injustices suffered by former President Lula and to gather signatures for the petition demanding his sentence be quashed.
