Bulletin 382 – People’s Committee in Defense of Lula and Democracy

  1. Former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva released a letter to the Brazilian people on this Friday, March 8, International Woman’s Day. The ex-President spoke of the importance of the resistance of women who fight for their lives and their rights in a sexist society that is plagued by violence on a daily basis. He also spoke of the attempts underway to remove rights, many of which were won during the 13 years of PT governments, by the right wing extremist government of Jair Bolsonaro (PSL). Lula’s message was read by PT’s candidate in the 2018 elections, Fernando Haddad, who visited the former President today.   1. To celebrate March 8, the Lula Livre Vigil held a series of protests, which joined so many others spread across Brazil. The women of the Vigil gave homage to Rio de Janeiro city councilwoman Marielle Franco, who was assassinated one year ago, by erecting a symbolic street sign with her name on it in the hall they named after her.

 

  1. Ex-President Lula reacted angrily to an insult to the constitution made by Jair Bolsonaro on Thursday, March 7th, when he threatened the Brazilian people by saying that “democracy and freedom only exist if the armed forces want them.” Speaking through Fernando Haddad, Lula said that he is worried with the threats to democracy made by the current President. “He asked me to say that democracy is guaranteed by the people, which is where all power emanates from, according to our Constitution,” said Haddad. Ex-President Dilma Rousseff, Gleisi Hoffmann, Benedita da Silva, Tereza Campello, Maria do Rosário and Eleanora Menicucci, who all had fundamental roles in the PT government, joined together on this Friday, March 8th, International Woman’s Day, to commemorate the huge victories achieved by the PT governments in terms of female emancipation in the country. They cited, as examples, programs like Minha Casa Minha Vida and Bolsa Familia, which provided autonomy for women in the family structure, as well as the Maria da Penha domestic violence law and the law against Feminicide, both of which had a huge impact on the battle against violence against women. On this Friday, in dozens of Brazilian cities, there were demonstrations of women in defense of their rights and against violence, in which many activists held up signs and banners in defense of freedom for ex-President Lula. In Paris, on the Republic square, members of the Committee in Solidarity with Lula and in Defense of Brazilian Democracy also held up signs in defense of Lula, denouncing his arbitrary political imprisonment due to a conviction that was manipulated by ex-Judge Sergio Moro, who became a politician and is now a cabinet minister in the right wing extremist government of Jair Bolsonaro.
