Bulletin 38 – People’s Committee for the Defense of Lula and Democracy

Curitiba, Paraná, Brazil – 4/21/04 – 10:15 AM

  1. Ouro Preto, Minas Gerais, will be the center of attention of the #LulaLivre movement this Saturday morning. The city holds a ceremony every year on this date to homage the martyr Tiradentes, during which the Medal of Inconfidence is awarded. This year one of the recipients will be Adolfo Pérez Esquivel, 1980 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate and human rights activist who was recently prohibited from visiting Lula in prison. The late City Councilwoman Marielle Franco, who was assassinated in March in Rio de Janeiro, and the chief of security for ex-President Lula, Lieutenant Valmir Moraes da Silva, will also be awarded with the Medal of Inconfidence.

  1. In parallel with the official event, there will be a public protest for the liberation of Lula which will include PT National President Gleisi Hoffman and all of the federal and state congressmen and women from Minas Gerais state.

  1. President Dilma Rousseff plans to go to Curitiba to visit Lula and the #LulaLivre Democratic Vigil camp, located near the entrance to the Federal Police headquarters. During a speech at San Diego State University, in California, the President denounced the isolation imposed on Lula. “It is the worst kind of punishment besides physical torture. Whoever uses violence and solitary confinement as a form of torture does it because they know that people need each other. This is why they put Lula in solitary confinement. Lula is a strong man, but he is being submitted to inhuman conditions in prison.”

  1. This afternoon will feature a heavy schedule of cultural activities in the camp in Curitiba:

3 PM – Launching of the book, “Feminismo em Comum: para todas, todes e todos,” (Common Feminism: for all genders) with author Márcia Tiburi.

4 PM – Musical show, “The World is not a Ball,” with Ana Decker, Octavio Camargo and Márcio Mattana.

5:30 PM – Circus show with Trupe 13.

  1. Don’t forget that today is Tiradentes Day, remembering the martyr who fought for an independent and sovereign Brazil, who was betrayed by a member of his group. Don’t lose the opportunity to remember the great traitor of contemporary Brazil, Michel Temer, in the social networks: #TemerSilverioDosReis.
