  1. One year ago today, on January 24th, 2018, Brazil ground to a halt to watch the judgment of Lula’s appeal, presented by his defense team against the political condemnation imposed by the judge who is now Justice Minister Sergio Moro, in the case known as the “Guaruja Triplex”. The fourth federal district court (TRF-4) upheld a judgment that was full of irregularities, opening the path for Lula to be blocked from running for President of the Republic. After visiting President Lula in Curitiba today, PT President, Senator Gleisi Hoffman and PT Vice President Márcio Macedo expressed their solidarity with Congressman Jean Wyllys, who announced on this Thursday afternoon, (January 24), that he will not take office out of fear from the threats he has been receiving. “We need to be clear that Bolsonaro is an accomplice to anything that happens to Jean Wyllys from here forwards,” said Gleisi. The Lula Institute also issued a note of solidarity with Jean Wyllys, who has been one of the most combative Congressmen during the last few years and has won innumerable prizes for his actions defending human rights and the LGBT population, and who gave up on his third mandate in Congress because he no longer feels safe in Brazil. “His motives are absolutely legitimate: an escalation of hate and intolerance in politics, which transformed him into a preferential target because of his ideological convictions and his principled and righteous positions,” says the note. Lula, via a message passed to the Vigil by Gleisi Hoffmann, spoke of the submissive posture Brazil is taking in relation to Venezuela. “Bolsonaro is unable to take care of his own son and he wants to mess with a another country,” he said. The activities at the Lula Livre Vigil on this Thursday, January 24th were coordinated by teachers and included the participation of activists from Rio Grande do Norte, Recife, Pernambuco, Olinda, Rio Grande do Sul and downstate Paraná. Venezuelan communications professional Carlos Hurtado participated in the good morning shout to Lula. He defended the maintenance of the Vigil until Lula is freed. “The whole world, even people in the North American empire understand that Lula has to be free and sovereign.
