1. Lula’s candidacy for the Nobel Peace Prize is being led by the Argentinian activist Adolfo Pérez Esquivel, who won the Prize in 1980, and the petition for his nomination already has nearly 500,000 signatures. A meeting with the Norwegian prize committee is scheduled for February 1st. Read more here: http://www.pt.org.br/
2. Activists went to Rio de Janeiro’s Arpoador beach this Saturday, January 19th to declare their support for Lula. The event was dubbed Free Lula Summer and united dozens of people who, in chorus, and in the ocean, demanded freedom for Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. 3. Ex-President Lula sent, on Saturday, January 19th, a letter of solidarity to the activists Rodrigo Pilha and Fabiano Leitão, the “Red Trumpeter”. Pilha and Fabiano, who are regulars at the Lula Livre Vigil in Curitiba, were taken into a Brasilia police station last week after a protest against Argentine President Mauricio Macri. In the letter Lula criticized the repression. “They need to learn that Democracy is not a pact of silence, but a society in movement searching for freedom. May trumpeters play across Brazil to wake people up to reality,” he said. Read the entire letter here:
4. The activities at the Lula Livre Vigil this Sunday, January 20th, were coordinated by women. The good morning shout to President Lula was led by PT President, Senator Gleisi Hoffmann (PT-Paraná), the PT National Woman’s Secretary, Anne Karolyne, and Ana Terra from the Paraná PT Woman’s Secretariat, along with dozens of other women.
