Bulletin 248 – People’s Committee in Defense of Lula and Democracy

1. Former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva published a letter today in the social media networks, in defense of the democratic rule of law and the vote for the Fernando Haddad/Manuela D’Ávila ticket in the presidential election runoff this Sunday. He said that it is the “time to unite the people, the democrats, everyone around the candidacy of Fernando Haddad, to restart the project of development with social inclusion and to defend Brazil’s option for democracy.” He also gave a warning, “we cannot let desperation take Brazil down the path of a fascist adventure.” Read more here: https://lula.com.br/carta-de-lula-sobre-o-segundo-turno-das-eleicoes/
2. The good afternoon shout to ex-President Lula on this Wednesday was lead by Isabela da Cruz, from the Paiol de Telha quilombola (maroon) community in Guarapuava, Paraná. She made a point of saying that she was in the Lula Livre Vigil to “remind all of the people from quilombolas in Brazil that we have a side, yes, and it is the side of the people, of life, of those who want land to plant, not to sell.” Isabela said this in response to comments from the right wing extremist candidate from the PSL that there are people on quilombolas who would like to sell their lands to real estate speculation funds.
3. This afternoon there were two conversation circles at the Lula Livre Vigil. In the first, led by Isabela de Cruz, the theme was institutional racism and quilombolas. The second, about gender and culture, was led by Luzia Ferreira, professor from the Federal University of Paraná (UFPR).
4. Activists from the Vigil also took part in a pamphlet distribution campaign for the Fernando Haddad/Manuela D’Ávila ticket in the working class neighborhood of Boqueirão in Curitiba. During the day they divided into two groups and circulated through the neighborhood, joining together at the Boqueirão bus terminal at 5 PM.
