Just as it did with the United Nations, when it denounced the arbitrary imprisonment of former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, the Workers Party will now denounce the illegal and anti-democratic practices used in the election campaign by the extreme-right candidate from the PSL party to the multilateral agencies. 2. The political situation in Brazil and the threats that are underway to democracy were debated in a conversation circle this afternoon in the Lula Livre Vigil. Professor Jaqueline Gomes de Jesus said that the union of democrats will defeat the specter of fascism which is haunting Brazilian society. De Jesus, who is a psychology professor at the Federal Education Institute in Belford Roxo, Rio de Janeiro, emphasized the importance of freeing former President Lula, who has been held as a political prisoner for 196 days. 3. The good afternoon shout to ex-President Lula on this Friday was led by Marcelo Pontes, an activist from the Landless Workers Movement (MST). He spoke of the importance of the Lula Livre Vigil in denouncing the unjust and arbitrary imprisonment of the former President and in defending democracy. “For us, democracy is well being, as opposed to a regime based on repression,” he said.
