Bulletin 217 – People’s Committee in Defense of Lula and Democracy

1. From the first moment of ex-President Lula’s political imprisonment in the Federal Police headquarters in Curitiba, Paraná, on April 7, supporters have defended and waited for his freedom in front of the building. This Sunday, September 23, marked 170 days of resistance and solidarity. “We haven’t missed one day. We are here resisting,” said Denise Viega, one of the Vigil organizers. 2. The #LulaLivre Vigil this Sunday featured a conversation circle with Xico Celso Camom, coordinator of the Memories, Truth and Justice Forum. Calmon is a former resistance fighter against the military dictatorship and author of the books “Sequestro Moral e o PT com isso” (Moral Kidnapping and the PT with this) and “Combates Pela Democracia” (Fighters for Democracy) and coauthor of the books “Resistência ao golpe de 2016” (Resistance to the 2016 Coup) and “Uma Sentença anunciada – o processo Lula” (A Sentence Foretold – the Lula Case). 3. Even after leading the greatest social revolution that Brazil has ever witnessed, former President Lula continues to be worried about the direction the nation’s economy is taking, especially since the 2016 coup was solidified to meet the interests of the financial markets. 4. The scream for freedom for former President Lula continues to echo through the four corners of Brazil. On this Sunday, September 23, São Paulo was hit by a veritable red wave, which took over a good part of downtown’s Paulista Avenue. The demonstration included a Lulaço protests led by Waginho on trumpet, Inaê Teixeira on Trombone and the Levante Popular drum corps. 5. The #LulaLivre Vigil will continue for an indeterminate time, until Lula is freed. The solidarity will continue in days to come, with ‘good morning’, ‘good afternoon’ and ‘good night’ shouts outside the Federal Police headquarters yelled by people from across Brazil and the World – social movement leaders and legions of anonymous fighters who want justice for Lula.
