Bulletin 214 – People’s Committee in Defense of Lula and Democracy

1. American linguist and activist Noam Chomsky today visited former President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, held as a political prisoner since April 7. After the meeting, Chomsky defended not only Lula’s right to run but also the right to be the president of Brazil. For Chomsky, Brazil is at an historical crossroads: “it could be the beginning of a permanent decline or Brazil could become the colossus of the South, as was predicted a century ago”.

2. The former Minister of Education and Chief of Staff of the President, Aloizio Mercadante, accompanied Chomsky on his visit to Lula and said that the former president feels optimistic about the victory of Fernando Haddad and Manuela D’Ávila, of the “The People Happy Again” Coalition (made up of the Workers’ Party, the Communist Party of Brazil and the Republican Party of the Social Order). However, according to Mercadante, Lula called on supporters to fight on until the last minute to win votes. Lula also suggested that they hold walks for peace throughout the country in defense of more schools, museums and culture, as opposed to those who defend arms and violence as solutions to social conflicts.
3. Noam Chomsky, in an interview with the website Tutaméia, said that judicial decisions against Lula are “outrageous” and represent “a gross error of justice from any point of view, even by Brazilian standards.” He pointed out that class hatred is extreme in Brazil, more than in the US, and can not be cured merely by putting on a dressing. For Chomsky, elections can be enough to be able to avoid the worst, but it is necessary to fact up to the basic problems: class hatred, huge inequality, and the factors holding back development.
