Bulletin 206 – People’s Committee in Defense of Lula and Democracy

  1. A group of 38 parliamentarians from four French political parties (LFI, PCF, LREM, PS) sent a letter to French President Emmanuel Macron, requesting that he immediately intervene, using all peaceful measures possible, so that ex-President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva can run for President in the Brazilian elections, in accordance with the UN Human Rights Committee Ruling. The parliamentarians say the action is about guaranteeing the legality of the elections based on international law and enabling the Brazilian people to exercise their sovereignty. In a letter written to Fernando Haddad, Lula speaks of his admiration and of the partnership he had with his ex-Minister of Education, who now running for the presidency for PT. “You know how I admire you as a human, for your courage, intelligence and dedication to the Brazilian people. Together, we had to opportunity to do many things for our country, mainly for education of children and youth,” says Lula. On Tuesday, September 11, Contracorrente Editora launched the book, “Luiz Inácio Luta da Silva: nós vimos uma prisão impossível” (Luiz Inácio Fight da Silva: We saw an impossible arrest), coordinated by Esther Solano, Camilo Vannuchi and Aldo Zaiden. The collective work includes chapters by people such as Vice Presidential Candidate Manuela D’Ávila, national PT President Gleisi Hoffman, philosopher Marcia Tiburi, ex-Ministers Gilberto Carvalho and Celso Amorim, and the psychoanalysts Maria Rita Kehl and Amnéris Maroni. The book serves as a historical and affective record of an arbitrary arrest and the impossibility of keeping what Lula represents inside of a prison cell. The “Good morning, President Lula!” shout on this Wednesday, September 12, at the #LulaLivre Vigil was followed by the book launching of “Se é público, é para todos,” (If it is public, it is for everyone), with João Moraies, from the National Petroleum Workers Union Federation (FUP). During the afternoon, Rosen Gutjahr facilitated a conversation circle on the theme of “industrial growth and its reflex on the economy through purchasing power during the Lula government.”
