Bulletin 205 – People’s Committee in Defense of Lula and Democracy

  1. Faced with the silence of the Federal Supreme Court and the arbitrary ruling by the Supreme Electoral Court on the issue of ex-President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s candidacy for the Presidency of the Republic, the Workers’ Party announced today, September 11, in Curitiba, that Fernando Haddad will be its candidate instead, responding to the direct request of Lula. In a historic letter written to the Brazilian people, Lula reiterated that he has not committed any crime and challenged the Operation Car Wash prosecutors, judge Sergio Moro and the 4th Regional Federal Court to show, “one single piece of proof” against him. In his first statement as the PT’s Presidential Candidate, standing next to his Vice Presidential running mate, Manuela D’Ávila (PC do B/Rio Grande do Sul), ex-São Paulo Mayor Fernando Haddad spoke of the economic and social advances during the Lula governments and harshly criticized the nation’s elites for the persecution of Lula, “the greatest President in the history of the nation.” He also condemned the sabotage being done by the alliance of media companies, the judiciary and the parliament which led to the destabilization of the nation and the 2016 coup. It was PT President, Senator Gleisi Hoffmann (Parana) who announced Lula’s decision in favor of Haddad in an emotional act that took place at the Lula Livre Vigil in front of thousands of activists. She criticized the judicial persecution of Lula, from his conviction by judge Moro without any proof of a crime and without material evidence, to the accelerated ruling by the Supreme Electoral Court, which bypassed legal protocols, deadlines and the law specifically to hurt the ex-President. Among the people present when Haddad’s name was announced as Lula’s choice to run for President of the Republic, were legitimate President Dilma Rousseff, the ex-Mayor of São Paulo’s wife, Ana Estela Haddad, the PT leaders in the House and Senate, Paulo Pimenta (Rio Grande do Sul) and Lindbergh Farias (Rio de Janeiro), the Governors of Minas Gerais and Piauí, Fernando Pimentel and Wellington Dias, Congressman Wadih Damous (PT-Rio de Janeiro) and ex-Congressman Eduardo Greenhalgh. Afterwords they participated in the “Good night, Lula!” yell, which ended with activists calling for “Free Lula!” and “Down with Globo Network!”

 

  1. After Lula nominated Fernando Haddad as his substitute in the 2018 Elections, the hashtag, #HaddadÈLula became the most commented subject on Twitter in Brazil, and also appeared as the second most popular topic in with World, on this Tuesday, September 11th.
