Bulletin 202 – People’s Committee in Defense of Lula and Democracy

1. Today, in the “Good morning, Lula!” shout, democratic resistance activists in Curitiba denounced the State of Exception in Brazil, which was materialized in the arbitrary conviction of ex-President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. During the afternoon, after the shout to Lula, the artist Suzi Montserrat sang songs for the members of the #LulaLivre Vigil, which was founded 155 days ago in front of the Federal Police headquarters where the greatest popular leader in Brazilian history is being held as a political prisoner.

2. Activists from the Defend Democracy in Brazil Committee demanded freedom for Lula during the friendly between Brazil and the United States, which took place in New Jersey on Friday, September 7. A banner with the phrase, “Free Lula” was hung in the stands of the MetLife stadium, showing the world that the ex-President is a political prisoner. The Committee also released a video in which they denounced the constant brainwashing process promoted by Globo TV network. Defend Democracy in Brazil, which is headquartered in New York, is an international solidarity collective in defense of Lula and Democracy in Brazil, that has members around the world. 3. On Friday, September 7th, MST national directorate member João Pedro Stédile facilitated a conversation circle at the Lula Livre Vigil on the challenges of the current political conjecture. In his analysis, Stédile compared Brazil to a ship sinking with no captain, using the image from the movie Titanic, in which the first class is the first one to save itself and the rest of the passengers distract themselves with the orchestra’s playing. “The orchestra is Globo TV network,” he said. 4. Today, in Florianópolis, there was another Lulaço, a new type of demonstration in public spaces in which the people denounce Lula’s arbitrary imprisonment and demand his freedom. On this Friday, September 7th, there was another Lulaço during the opening of the 33rd São Paulo Bienal in the Ibirapuera Park Pavilion.
