  1. This Monday (27/08), the defense team of former President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva filed an appeal with the Higher Electoral Court (TSE) to ensure that Rede Globo and other television broadcasters provide equal coverage of election campaigns and treat the candidacy of Lula in the way they do those of the other candidates. The Electoral Law requires such equal coverage and prohibits any candidate from having privileged treatment by radio and TV broadcasters, but the broadcasters have deliberately sought to obscure Lula’s campaign and that of his deputy and spokesman, Fernando Haddad. 1. This morning, former President Lula was visited by Fernando Haddad and Senator Gleisi Hoffman (Paraná State), the party’s president. Both are lawyers for the former president and have worked with him on his legal status and the planning of his election campaign. Haddad reiterated that the ruling of the UN Human Rights Committee to the effect that the Brazilian state must guarantee Lula’s right to be a candidate should be categorically complied with, as international treaties have the force of national law when they have been approved by the Brazilian Congress.

  1. Most of the justices on the Federal Supreme Court (STF) have already defended the jurisprudence of the Clean Record Act (Lei da Ficha Limpa) and the international treaties signed by Brazil that support the legality of the candidacy of former president Lula. 1. Sister Inês Pereira, of the Congregation of the Franciscan Sisters of St. Joseph, visited former President Lula on Monday (27/8). She said she was impressed by the serenity and faith of the former president. “The message I bring from him is that we continue in the struggle, with hope, because he is hopeful and believes that justice in Brazil can still happen, even with all political maneuvering and persecution against him”, Sister Inês Pereira said after her visit.

  1. The “Good afternoon” yell to former President Lula on this, the 143rd day of democratic resistance in Curitiba, enjoyed the participation of Vilmar Pacífico, an MST activist who participated in the 26-day hunger strike in Brasília against Lula’s illegal and unjust imprisonment. Richard Faulhaber, who fasted for 21 days at the Free Lula Vigil in Curitiba also participated in the greeting to the former president. Later, both participated in a round-table discussion with activists of the democratic resistance on the mobilization in defense of freedom for Lula and his right to be candidate for the presidency of the Republic.
