- The fight for Lula’s right to run for the presidency is promising and will continue. This is what Congressman Wadih Lula Damous (PT- Rio de Janeiro) said this afternoon, August 21st, after visiting the ex-President at the federal police headquarters in Curitiba. He reiterated that Brazil has to obey the ruling by the UN Human Rights Committee that determines that Lula has to be allowed to run. - Lula’s right to run in the 2018 presidential elections is a subject that is being covered in the press around the world. The New York Times (USA) and Público (Portugal) newspapers included articles in their Tuesday, August 21st issues about the importance of Lula’s candidacy to guarantee democracy in Brazil. In the New York Times, the article is by Jorge Castaneda, the ex-Minister of Foreign Relations from Mexico. In Público, the article is by José Socrates, the ex-Prime Minister of Portugal. - On the 22nd day of the hunger strike, the Brasil Popular Front called on activists to demonstrations in front of the Federal Supreme Court today, August 21st, and Tomorrow, August 22nd, to support the 7 activists who have been striking since July 31st. They are entering a critical state of health without any reaction from the President of the Supreme Court, Minister Carmen Lucia. They are asking that the Court rule on cases that question the legality of imprisonment after the second appeals process and defend the right for Lula to run for Office. - The “good afternoon” yell to ex-President Lula had a Hispanic touch today, on the 137th day at the #LulaLivre Vigil, with the participation of Paola Estrada, the coordinator of the Bolivaran Alliance of the Americas (ALBA) and the International Operative Secretariat of Latin American social movements. In a conversation circle with activists from the democratic resistance she said that, “Lula’s illegal imprisonment is part of the context of attacks against democracy in all of Latin America and the struggle for his freedom unites the entire Latin American continent.” Read more here:
