- The ex-President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva was visited today, August 9th, by Sharan Burrow, General-Secretary of the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC). “We came to bring him the solidarity of 207 million workers from around the world,” said Burrow, who came to Curitiba accompanied by CUT Union Federation President Vagner Freitas. “The world knows that he is a political prisoner and hasn’t committed any crime,” she said. - The #LulaLivre Vigil started off its 125th day of democratic resistance with a strong union presence. ITUC General Secretary Sharon Burrow, CUT leader Vagner Freitas and a group of Uruguayan union leaders participated in the “good morning” shout to Lula. The shout to Lula also included the voices of Uruguayan senators, ex-Minister and Congressman Pepe Vargas (PT-Rio Grande do Sul) and 46 doctors from the Doctors for Democracy and People’s Doctors Networks, from 8 Brazilian states.
- Uruguayan Senator Juan Castillo (PC) participated in the “good afternoon” shout to ex-President Lula, accompanied by union leaders from his country. “We are the bearers of a combat shout and of solidarity with the Brazilian people. Soon, Lula will be free and the corrupt ones will be in jail,” he said.
- After the morning greetings to the ex-president, a conversation circle took place on the theme of “the consequences of coups for the workers of Latin America,” with Sanggoon Han, the ex-President of the Korean Federation of Trade Unions (KCTU) from South Korea, and Martín Guerra, president of the Natural Gas Union of Uruguay.
- PT National President, Senator Gleisi Hoffman (Paraná), reaffirmed that ex-President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva will be registered as candidate on August 15th in Brasilia in the Supreme Electoral Court. She invited the population to come out and participate in this big demonstration which will go down in history. - Important international legal scholars denounced the irregularities in Lula’s judgment on this Thursday, August 9th. They sent a letter to Supreme Court President, Minister Carmen Lúcia, in which they expressed great worry with the handling of the case against Lula. Among the experts who signed the letter is Spanish ex-Judge Baltasar Garzón, who is famous for issuing an arrest warrant against former Chilean Dictator Augusto Pinochet in 1998. - Starting at 10 PM on this Thursday night, the mission of speaking in the name of the ex-President during a debate transmitted on the social networks will fall on PT National President, Senator Gleisi Hoffman, Lula’s spokesman Fernando Haddad, Sérgion Gabrielle, who is one of the coordinators of Lula’s governance plan, and Manuela D’Ávila. The initiative is being made to bypass the blockade imposed by commercial TV networks which are excluding Lula and his spokesman from the presidential debates.
