1. In an article for Correio Braziliense newspaper, ex-President Lula criticizes the Temer government and speaks about the 2016 coup and threats to national sovereignty. “The Michel Temer government, born out of a parliamentary coup, is a growing threat to national sovereignty. The political and economic forces which sustain it are tied to foreign interests and violate the Constitution and democracy to impose an agenda that is destroying Brazilian wealth,” he says. 2. On this Friday, July 27th, the Semi-arid Caravan against Hunger left from Caetés, in upstate Pernambuco, to start a 4000 kilometer journey across the country. The initiative is being made to denounce the increase in extreme poverty in Brazil, which is shown in statistics that illustrate the threat of Brazil returning to the UN FAO’s World Hunger Map, which Brazil appeared in every year until 2014. 3.On this Saturday, July 28th, the largest political and cultural act in the recent history of the country will kick off – the Free Lula Festival. The event is organized by artists, cultural activists and representatives of the Frente Brasil Popular and the Frente Povo Sem Medo and is a protest against the political imprisonment of the ex-President and for democracy and justice in Brazil. The activities will start at 2 PM at the Lapa aqueduct in Rio de Janeiro and will shows and workshops and free and unforgettable shows with some of the biggest names in Brazilian music like Chico Buarque, Gilberto Gil and Beth Carvalho. 4. Ex-President Lula sent a letter to the Brazilian Collective Health Association Congress. Represented by ex-Health Minister Alexandre Padilha, who read the letter, the ex-President defended health programs and the importance of the Brazilian Public Health System (SUS). 5. The anthology Lula Livre – Lula Livro, will be launched this Saturday ,July 28th, during the Paraty Literary Festival in Rio de Janeiro state. In all 86 writers and cartoonists from across the country, including Xico Sá, Frei Betto, Alice Ruiz, Raduan Nassar, Chico Buarque, Aldir Blanc and Chacal contributed to the book, which was organized by the writers Ademir Assunção and Marcelino Freiri. 6. The Lula Livre Vigil arrived at its 112th day with renewed energy to resist, with the arrival of activists from all over Brazil, like Cícero Filho, from João Pessoa, Nerli Bordin from Bahia, the Guillard family from Rio de Janeiro as well as activists from Minas Gerais, Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina. During the day the there were cultural activiies and as evening set in, the traditional ‘Lights for Lula’ ceremony, which is one of the most striking events in the Vigil. As it finished, the people sang, “Lula, Warrior of the Brazilian People,’ and demanded freedom for the ex-President.
