1. The 24th Forum of São Paulo Encounter – the annual meeting of part of the Latin American leftist political parties that so infuriates Brazilian right-wing extremists – started on this Sunday, July 15th and will continue until Tuesday, July 17th, in Havana, Cuba. 2. In the Forum of SP, President Dilma Rousseff and Senator Gleisi Hoffmann, national president of PT, denounced Luis Inácio Lula da Silva’s condition as a political prisoner during various activities and interviews. “They realized that President Lula would have an overwhelming victory. When he was free he was traveling across Brazil in bus caravans, and this compromised the possibility of one of their candidates emerging. 3. On this Tuesday, July 17th, a delegation of the Senate’s Justice and Constitution Commission (CCJ) will inspect the conditions in which ex-President Lula has been held prisoner in the Curitiba Federal Police headquarters for more than 100 days. The demand for the visit was made by Senator Jorge Vianna (PT-Acre) and is scheduled for 3 PM.
4. The Lula Livre Vigil coordinating team moved to a rented lot, which is located in front of the Curitiba Federal Police station today, on July 16th. The space was rented to solve some of the Vigil’s logistical problems, and the deal was made in the context of dialogue with the Curitiba Mayor’s Office.
5. Today, on Monday, July 16th, the “Free Lula, Lula is Innocent March” began in Caruaru, Pernambuco. The March is an initiative of the Landless Rural Workers’ Movement (MST) and the Brazil Popular Front (FBP) with support from the Unified Workers’ Central labor union federation (CUT-Pernambuco). On Friday, when the march arrives in Recife, it will have traveled over 100 kilometers and passed through seven cities, with public demonstrations occurring in each one. 6. Naudal Gomes, Anglican Episcopal Bishop, visited Lula this Monday afternoon and brought optimism to the activists who are fighting against injustice in Curitiba. After his visit Gomes said that Lula is waiting for Judge Sergio Moro to present proof showing that he committed the crimes that he is accused of. And he reaffirmed his plan to register his candidacy for President of the Republic on August 15th.
7. Anaceli Azevedo, director of the Sindipetro Petroleum Workers’ Union in Paraná and Santa Catarina, facilitated a conversation in the Vigil today about the handing over of Brazilian petroleum to foreign companies and the devaluation of Petrobras.
