Bulletin 132 – People’s Committee in Defense of Lula and Democracy

1. Ex-President Lula, the PT’s candidate for president, continues to be a preferential leader of the Brazilian people. In a poll by IBOPE that was commissioned by BAND and released on Friday (29th), Lula is the clear leader in the state of São Paulo, the largest electoral college in the nation. The poll shows Lula with 24% voter intention. São Paulo state has 33 million registered voters, according to data from the Supreme Electoral Court (TSE). 2. Former Chancellor Celso Amorim visited Argentina this week and continued to defend the candidacy of ex-President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva for the presidency of the Republic. In an interview with La Nacion newspaper, Amorim said that Lula is the only possible project for the PT. “We are talking about the man who was consecrated as the greatest President in Brazilian history, who is still leading all polls. Abandoning his candidacy through electoral opportunism would be ethically questionable and a huge political error,” he said, while visiting Buenos Aires as international coordinator for Lula’s presidential committee. 3. On Friday, June 29th, Lula’s pre-candidacy was launched in Teresina, with the presence of Piaui Governor Wellington Dias. Hundreds of people packed the Diferencial Buffet to show their support for the ex-President from PT. The National Secretary of PT, Gleide Andrade, also participated in the event and emotionally read a letter from ex-President Lula to the Brazilian people. The event included participation from Congresspeople, Senators, PT activists, political leaders and members of unions and social movements. 4. Campaign coordinators from the pre-candidates from the left are unanimous in prioritizing reinstating the rights that were weakened by the Temer government. In a debate which was held on June 29th, Fernando Haddad, coordinator of Lula’s government plan defended the revoking of labor law reform and highlighted the need for tax and banking reforms as well as the economic regulation of the means of communication. 5. The demands and wishes to see Lula free continue to reverberate through Brazil and across the world. The singer Gilberto Gil took advantage of his tour in Portugal to show his support for Lula, who has been a political prisoner for over 80 days in Curitiba. On this Saturday, Gil finishes his participation in the popular festival in Lisbon with a free show in the gardens of the Torre de Belem.
