Bulletin 224 – People’s Committee in Defense of Lula and Democracy
Curitiba, Paraná, Brazil – 9/30/2018 – 8:15 PM

1. In a letter to the PT activists released this Sunday, September 30, former President Lula spoke of the importance of the 2018 electoral process, of the struggles that the party has been facing and the injustice of his imprisonment. Lula also said that he feels well-represented by Fernando Haddad as candidate for the presidency and said he is sure that he will affectionately take care of the population. “I ask you to fight hard for Haddad’s victory. Leave your homes every day to help with the campaign and ask people to vote for him. Do it for him as you would for me,” said Lula. 2. Federal Supreme Court Minister Luiz Fux worked until late Friday night, September 28, to inflict one more act of violence against Lula. It was already past 10 PM when he left his cabinet with an order to bar the former President from giving any interviews. His act was the result of a series of arbitrary actions which even goes beyond the kind of censorship imposed by the military dictatorship which lasted from 1964-1985. 3. On this Sunday there were #EleNão (#nothim) demonstrations in Madrid and Montevideo, the capitals of Spain and Uruguay, respectively. In order to denounce and fight the fascism that Jair Bolsonaro’s candidacy represents to the presidency, Brazilian expats and locals joined together in these two cities and took to the streets to show their repugnance with the Rio de Janeiro congressman. On Saturday demonstrations against Bolsonaro took place in every Brazilian state and 20 countries around the world.

4. This Sunday marks 177 days of Lula’s political imprisonment in the Federal Police Headquarters in Curitiba. During this entire period, the ex-President has heard daily greetings shouted by the activists who have come from all over Brazil to Curitiba to denounce the persecution against him and to fight for his freedom. One week before the October 7th election, the Vigil received visitors from Brasilia, São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Ceará, Santa Catarina, Rio Grande do Sul and many activists from Curitiba and downstate Paraná.
