1. Former President Lula, who has been arbitrarily barred from speaking with journalists, is worried about threats to freedom of the press in Brazil. The subject was a theme of the conversation that he had with Fernando Haddad this Monday morning. “We want to show solidarity with the press organizations which are trying to deliver the information that citizens demand to them,” said Haddad during a press conference in front of the Federal Police headquarters. 2. Nevertheless, today on Monday (October 1), Supreme Court Minister Ricardo Lewandowski reaffirmed the legality of his September 28 ruling which granted the Folha de São Paulo newspaper and the journalist Florestan Fernandes Jr. the right to interview ex-President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Lewandowski ordered that his ruling should be immediately obeyed, under penalty of committing the crime of disobedience. 3. The actor Danny Glover gave an international warning about the risks that the 2018 elections represent to Brazilian democracy. In a video published on this Monday, October 1, he explains that the coup, which led to the arbitrary imprisonment of Lula and barred him from running for office, may result in the election of a fascist from the extreme right. The short film was idealized by Senator Bernie Sanders, the most important democratic socialist leader in the US Democratic party. 4. In response to the leaking of a plea bargain testimony by Antonio Palocci which was already rejected by the Federal Public Prosecutors office, the National Executive Commission of the Workers Party released a statement in response to the maneuver by judge Sergio Moro to interfere in the electoral process. “Moro’s maneuver, an embarrassing trick, is one more proof of the lack of preparation of those who have used the justice system during the past few years to try to destroy Lula and the PT who now see that the real justice will be made by the people in the October elections. 5. The good morning shout to the former President on this 178th day of resistance took place at 10 AM and was led by MST leader João Pedro Stedile, who announced that all of the social movement’s activists will put all of their efforts into electing Lula’s candidate for the presidency, Fernando Haddad. PT President Senator Gleisi Hoffman also spoke to the activists. “This election is an opportunity to block this coup from moving forwards and making the changes that we want,” she said.
