  1. The Italian ex-Prime Minister Massimo D’Alema and the ex-Governor of the Mexican Federal District Cuauhtémoc Cárdenas visited ex-President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva today, September 13, and expressed their shock at his arbitrary imprisonment. D’Alema called Lula’s conviction “a monstrosity” and a “legal aberration” and said that the ex-President’s image continues intact in Europe, especially since important legal scholars have examined the case and seen that there is no proof against Lula and that he has been denied his right of defense.   1. Ex-President Lula, held as political prisoner for 160 days, will receive the title of Doctor Honoris Causa from Comahue National University in Argentina. The dean of the institution, Gustavo Víctor Crisafulli, announced the awarding of the honorary degree to the ex-President on this September 13.   1. The lawyers from the defense of ex-President Lula, Cristiano Zanin and Valeska Teixeira, denounced today, in Geneva, that Brazil has disobeyed the UN Human Rights Committee decision that guarantees the right of the ex-President to run for office this year. Valeska characterized the procedure which resulted in Lula’s imprisonment as an abuse within the trial process conducted for political objectives.   1. The second edition of the Lula Livre Festival will take place this Sunday, September 16th, on Paulista Avenue in São Paulo. Artists such as Otto, Ana Cañas, Dexter, Edgard Scandurra, Odair José and Marcelo Jeneci, among others, are already confirmed for the event, which is being held in demand for freedom for ex-President Lula. The festival has been organized by several different artists and the Frente Brasil Popular (Brazil People’s Front). The first edition, in Rio de Janeiro on July 28th, drew a crowd of around 60,000.
  2. A group of approximately 50 metallurgical workers from the ABC region of greater São Paulo came to the #LulaLivre Vigil yesterday and today, September 13, in solidarity with the ex-President. Among them were many contemporaries of Lula’s days in the union, including ex-Congressmen Djalma Bom and Jair Meneguelli, who was the first president of the CUT labor union federation. The group delivered a message of support to Lula through José Ferreira da Silva, Father Chico, who is the ex-President’s brother.

 

  1. On the 160th day of resistance and denouncing Lula’s political imprisonment to the world, the Lula Livre Vigil activists had reinforcements from the ABC union members during the good morning, good afternoon and good night shouts to the ex-President. The metallurgical workers also participated in conversation circles with other union members and rural workers on current issues.
