Bulletin 152 – People’s Committee in Defense of Lula and Democracy

Curitiba, Paraná, Brazil – 7/20/2018 – 8 PM

1. On this Friday, July 20th, the national directorate of the Workers Party unanimously approved the 5 thematic axes and the driving ideas of the “2018 Lula Government Plan – Brazil is Happy Again”, in the party headquarters in São Paulo. The central axes are sustained by the experiences and legacy of the two Lula governments – defense of democracy, guarantee of rights, and insertion of the people into the national budget. However, at this moment they present advances in the proposals as well. Read more here: http://www.pt.org.br/baixe-os-cinco-eixos-tematicos-do-plano-lula-de-governo-2018/

2. In a previously unseen interview with Lula by the organizers of the book, “A Verdade Vencerá”, published by Boitempo, the ex-President recalls the history of coups in Brazil and says that, with him in the running they will have to win on the streets. “The Brazilian elites caused a Brazilian President to shoot himself in the heart by their accusations. The Brazilian elite did not want Juscelino Kubitchek to run, they didn’t want him to take power, they tried three coups against him and afterwords made another coup so that he couldn’t run for office in 1965.” Watch the entire video here: https://www.facebook.com/obrasildamudanca/videos/867138480148856/

3. The former Mayor of São Paulo Fernando Haddad visited ex-President Lula this Friday, July 20th, and gave a press conference afterwords. He spoke of the Lula Government Plan and reaffirmed that the goal of the program is to undo the setbacks of the coup. “The Plan will meet the level of the crisis that they created in the country,” said Haddad. http://www.pt.org.br/e-o-projeto-temer-contra-o-nosso-representado-por-lula-diz-haddad/

4. The story of Lula’s resistance is the reference point to inspire democratic mobilization in Curitiba, which is renewed on this 105th day of action. This is what Carlito Merss, ex-Congressman and Joinville Mayor said, after spending most of the day in the Lula Livre Vigil. “By the old logic of this country, Lula should have died of hunger and thirst in the Northeast. But he resisted, thanks to the fighting spirit of his mother, Dona Lindu, who had no fear, put her kids in the back of a truck and rode for 13 days before arriving in São Paulo,” he said. 5. On this Friday, a representative from the International Federation of Brazilians Against the Coup, which aggregates democratic collectives around the world, visited the Vigil. “It is exciting to be here,” said Marcia Sarquis, who lives in Mexico. Even though we live abroad we are Brazilians and we are deeply affected by what happens here,” she said. This afternoon there was a public conversation facilitated by Ana Carolina Dartora, from the APP Union, which represents public school teachers in the state of Paraná. Later on this afternoon there was a theater workshop with Professor Revero de Paulo Ribeiro, from the Landless Rural Workers Movement (MST) Culture Collective.
