Bulletin 13 – People’s Committee in Defense of Lula and Democracy

Curitiba, Parana, Brazil 4/11/2018 13h46

1. Jaques Wagner, the ex-governor of Bahia and ex-minister from the Dilma Rousseff administration, visited the camp this morning and reaffirmed Lula’s pre-candidacy for the presidency. “I continue to support my candidate, Lula. I don’t have a plan A, B or Z. My plan is Plan L, for Lula,” he said.

2. In Spain, ex-President Dilma Rousseff was given a standing ovation at the end of her speech in a conference in Madrid. “Democracy in Brazil is at risk,” she said, “the process of exception is deepening. We have to be clear that this process of exception has happened in Latin America in the past and can return. We need international solidarity. We need to explain this to the World. We need people everywhere to know what is happening in Brazil. PT will struggle in all legal manners so that Lula can be candidate for the presidency”. On Thursday, April 12, she will participate in a conference in Barcelona.

3. A large group of renowned legal scholars and professors from the most important Brazilian law schools participated in a protest this morning at the Democratic Vigil in Curitiba. Among the scholars and professors present, were Eneida Desirée Salgado (UFPR), Ivete Caribé (lawyer), Katya Isaguirre (UFPR), Jacinto Nelson Miranda Coutinho (UFPR), Juarez Cirino dos Santos and Marcelo Neves (UnB).

4. Marcelo Neves, professor at the University of Brasilia (UnB) criticized the politization of the Brazilian judiciary. “It is the judiciary which is now controlling the distinction between enemy and friend. This instrumentalized judiciary now determines who is a friend of the state – of Brazil- and who is an enemy. It is really the friend of the dominant elites who do not accept social inclusion,” he said.

5. Fernando Haddad, ex-Mayor of São Paulo and ex-Minister of Education in the Lula government, will visit the Democratic Vigil #LulaLivre this afternoon to show his solidarity for Lula and the activists who are camped out there. His arrival is scheduled for 7 PM.

6. The schedule for the rest of the afternoon (which was also detailed in this morning’s bulletin) is as follows. Carnaval groups from Curitiba will take to the streets of the camp at 4 PM. At 5, there will be another meeting of the Black Movement, which will be followed by an ecumenical mass at 6 PM. There will be another protest at the end of the day with political leaders, members of Congress and party leaders together with the social movements.
