- Former Argentinian President Eduardo Duhalde and writer Emir Sadir met with former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on this Thursday, July 18th. “I have great affection for Lula. He is my only friend outside of Argentina and he spent his entire time in office fighting for Latin American integration. I am very happy I was able to meet with him,” said Duhalde. “You can imagine how exciting it is to meet Lula. But now it is exciting and absurd, because the man who should be governing this country is here, unfairly imprisoned,” he said. Both of the visitors signed the petition which demands the immediate reversal of all rulings against Lula. - Former President Lula wrote a letter to the journalist Mauro Lopes, host of the program Paz e Bem. In the letter, Lula responds to a letter from Lopes and speaks of the importance of spirituality and humanism in times of struggle. “Mauro, the true humanist is more concerned with giving than receiving. It is important to lie your head on your pillow every night with a clear conscience knowing you have done good,” wrote Lula. - During the morning of this Thursday, July 18th, the landless families from the Marielle Lives! agrarian reform camp, located in Valinhos, in the São Paulo countryside, were surprised by an assassin who, driving his pickup at a high speed, ran over dozens of protesters. Among them was Luiz Ferreira da Costa, 73, who died on his way to the emergency room. The landless families were protesting for their camp to be hooked up to the public water system. The Landless Rural Workers Movement (MST) helps coordinate the Lula Livre Vigil and its work in areas like education and organic agricultural production is renowned around the world. - Law students from across Brazil visited the Lula Livre Vigil on this Thursday, July 18th to denounce the biased, political and ideological actions of the judiciary during the conviction of former President Lula. They participated in a conversation circle on the theme of “abuse of the law and criminal due process,” with Manoel Caetano from Lula’s defense team, law professor Michele Cabrera and Paraná Landless Rural Workers Movement (MST) leader Roberto Baggio.
