- Barcelona’s city government, under Mayor Ada Colau who is the member of a coalition of leftist political parties called “Barcelona in Common”, issued an institutional declaration last Wednesday, November 14th, condemning Brazilian President-elect Jair Bolsonaro’s violent, hate discourse and “demanding immediate freedom for ex-President Lula, who was condemned in a process marked by enormous irregularities”. In response to this gesture, the PT published an official thank you declaration, signed by PT President Gleisi Hoffmann, along with PT House leader Paulo Pimenta and Senate leader Lindbergh Farias. - On this Saturday, November 17, the Lula Livre Vigil completed 225 days of democratic resistance in defense of freedom for the ex-President. One of the visitors today was ex-Mayor of Ubatuba, São Pauo, Maurício Moromizato (PT) who spoke with activists at the Vigil about municipal public policies and possible consequences of the ultra-neoliberal and conservative posture of the president-elect. A dentist by trade, Moromizato became a reference for good management throughout the Northern coast of São Paulo during his mandate.
- The Lula Livre Vigil was also visited this Saturday by Márcia da Rosa and Hilma de Lourdes Santos, both from the Movimento Nacional de Luta por Moradia (National Housing Struggle Movement/MNLM). Together, they facilitated a conversation circle called “urban reform and the right to the city facing the new Brazilian government.” The theme has become urgent due to threats being made by Bolsonaro to criminalize social movements that fight for human rights, including the right to housing, which is a dramatic problem in a nation which has a habitational deficit of 7.6 million residential units.
