Bulletin 174 – People’s Committee in Defense of Lula and Democracy

  1. This Saturday morning, August 11th, at the Lula Livre Vigil, the book “Lula Livre – Lula Livro” was launched. The book, a manifesto for freedom for ex-President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, was edited by Ademir Assunção and Marcelino Freire. It contains stories, poems, chronicles and cartoons created by people such as Laerte Coutinho, Chico Buarque, Raduan Nassar, Frei Betto, and Augusto dos Campos, among others.   1. This Saturday’s “good morning president Lula” shout was joined by Pedro Carrano, a journalist who wrote one of the texts in the Lula Livro book. In his contribution to the work, Carrano writes about the resistance activists in Curitiba. He and Ademir Assunção were interviewed by the Democracy Network program, where they spoke about the importance of the work in defense of Lula and in denouncing the arbitrary actions by judge Sergio Moro against the ex-President.

 

  1. More than 5000 members of the Landless Rural Workers Movement (MST) joined members of other social movements connected to the Via Campesina and are already marching on route to Brasilia, leaving from three different points on the far periphery of the Federal District. They are participating in the National Free Lula March, for freedom for ex-President Lula and in defense of Democracy. The arrival in Brasilia is scheduled for August 15th, the day that Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s candidacy for the Presidency of the Republic will be registered in the Supreme Electoral Court. On Monday, August 13th, protests in defense of freedom for Lula, denouncing the judicial farce of judge Sergio Moro’s decree for arbitrary imprisonment will take place in the United States and Canada. Protests will take place in New York, Montreal, Washington DC and Boston, with participation of the Defend Democracy in Brazil Committee (New York), the Boston Collective Against the Coup (Boston), The Brazilian Ex-Pats Collective for Democracy and Social Justice (Washington DC), and the Brazil-Montreal Collective (Montreal).   1. Lula’s campaign fund from individual donors is already the biggest of its kind in Brazil. During the debate with Lula on Thursday, August 9th, the campaign passed the R$500,000 mark.
