  1. Former Colombian President Ernesto Samper, after a visit to former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva at the Federal Police headquarters Thursday (23rd), said he would ask the United Nations to dispatch a special commission to verify compliance with the injunction granted in favor of Lula by the UN Human Rights Committee. The Committee ruled that the Brazilian State must ensure Lula be able to exercise his right to be a candidate. The former Secretary-General of Unasur (the Union of South American Nations) read a statement stating that the international community stands with Lula and that the former president is a political prisoner and being subjected to judicial persecution. The Colombian non-governmental organization Vivamos Humanos, led by Ernesto Samper, said in a written statement that former President Lula had been unjustly convicted and was being held as a political prisoner. The statement, drawn up by lawyers from Vivamos Humanos, cited nine violations in the suit against Lula and states emphatically that he is a political prisoner and therefore should be released immediately. After his visit to Lula this afternoon (23), the former minister and vice-president of the Workers’ Party, Luiz Dulci, said that former president Lula is worried about the the situation in Brazil at present, an especially the situation of the Brazilian people. Dulci stressed that the best way to overcome problems is by democratic means, with free elections and with Lula participating as a candidate. He stated that he supported the annulment, by the higher courts, of the sentence handed down of Judge Sérgio Moro which found Lula guilty in spite of a total lack of evidence.

Eleven European and Latin American lawyers wrote to the government on Thursday (the 23rd) urging Brazil to comply with the UN Human Rights Committee’s ruling that Lula must be able to exercise his rights as a presidential candidate. The letter was also sent to the President of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), Carmen Lúcia, and the ten other STF judges, including Rosa Weber, who currently chairs the Higher Electoral Court. The letter was signed by Baltasar Garzón, of Spain, Luigi Ferrajoli of Italy, William Bourdon of France, Emilio García Mendez of Argentina, and the Honorary President of the Human Rights League (LDH), Henri Leclerc among others. The Spanish Podemos party released a public communiqué today (the 23rd) in which it denounced the judicial persecution against former President Lula and defended his right to stand for the October presidential election. The text demands that the government of Spain, whose current ruling party is the PSOE (Partido Socialista Obrero Español), add its voice to the “international clamor” for respect for Lula’s political rights. The “good afternoon” yell to former President Lula on this, the 139th day of democratic resistance in Curitiba, was reinforced by a delegation of 12 Belgian and Brazilian trade unionists working in the cleaning and conservation sector. “We have always been in solidarity with the Lula trade union movement and even more so now that he is incarcerated,” said Annick de Ruvier, one of the four Belgian delegates from the Confederation de Syndicats Chantiers (CSC), which represents 1.3 million workers.

 

  1. The new #LulaLivre Vigil kitchen started work today, and in its first day of operations produced about 100 meals. The 100mises are located 150 meters from the headquarters of the Federal Police. The new equipment allows for the production of up to 1.5 thousand meals per day, according to Cristofers Chaves, an activist from the Union of Metallurgists of the “ABC” region of Greater São Paulo.
