Bulletin 597 – People’s Committee in Defense of Lula and Democracy

  1. The visit to Lula by the leaders of the largest union confederations in the US and Spain, Richard Trumka and Pepe Alvarez, show the growing wave of international support for the former President. The leaders came to Curitiba to bestow the George Meany-Lane Kirkland Human Rights Award on their Brazilian comrade, for his immense legacy on the Brazilian working class. The award, given by the AFL-CIO, was one more sign that the cry to free Lula is growing louder across the four corners of the world. “When we chose to give the award to Lula, the decision was unanimous. It is an honor to deliver this award in the name of the 56 unions which, together, represent more than 12.5 million workers in the United States,” said Trumka, the President of the AFL-CIO.

Pepe Àlvarez, General Secretary of the Spanish UGT union confederation, promised to increase the mobilization to free Lula on the European continent. “We will call on our 150,000 affiliates to work towards Lula’s freedom. We will also pressure the Spanish government to bring the fight to the international courts so that Lula can be released and this farce will end. This is our commitment,” he said.

 

  1. Leaders of the Workers Party, including Dilma Rousseff and Eduardo Suplicy recorded a video with the social movements calling people to the streets for “Justice for Lula”, this October 13th in São Paulo. The goal is to call everyone to the streets for the demonstration, which is organized by the National Lula Livre Committee, the Frente Brasil Popular and the Povo sem Medo. The “good afternoon, President Lula” shout on this Thursday, October 10th, was led by teachers and the international delegation which came to Brazil to participate in the 13th CUT National Congress. Afterwards, the activists met to participate in a conversation circle on “the current political scene and the Lula Livre Vigil,” coordinated by Rose Gomes, from the CUT Paraná state directorate.
